NAFRI held the 2nd international conference on Sustainable Sloping Lands and Watershed Management was held from December 12-15, 2006 in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR. More than 250 participants attended from 18 countries in the region and the world. At the conference, 44 presentations were made as well as more than 30 posters presented on innovative research and development activities in the uplands.
The main purpose of the conference was to explore different strategies to promote environmental sustainability and enhance livelihoods of rural communities that inhabit upland areas. SSLWM 2006 also highlighted emerging planning and management strategies for the sustainable management of upper catchments. A particular focus of the conference was on strategies that both promote environmental sustainability and address the socio-economic circumstances of marginalized rural communities that inhabit these areas.

Five years after its establishment, NAFRI organized this workshop on upland research and development in order to bring together the range of technical knowledge and experiences that have been gained both within NAFRI and in other projects and programs working in upland areas. This was the first major technical workshop organized by NAFRI and the importance of the topic was clearly demonstrated by sheer number of participants interested in attending.
