A training course, GSR-Hybrid Rice Seed Production Technology, was held on 27-29 October 2010 at the National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI) in Vientiane. It was jointly organized by NAFRI, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and IRRI, under the Green Super Rice (GSR) project.
It was the first training course held in Lao PDR to introduce hybrid rice technology to Laotian researchers. It was attended by 25 researchers representing the Lao PDR research centers in Luang Prabang, Vientiane, Savannakhet, and Champasak. Bounthong Bouahom, director general of NAFRI, opened the event.
The course aims mainly to train researchers to understand the GSR-hybrid rice technology but is also designed to suit low-input conditions, especially on chemical fertilizer and irrigation water. It provided quality seed production technology for both hybrids and inbreds and included the use of CropStat software for statistical analysis. The course also introduced the IRRI-developed Quality Seed Production module and hybrid rice seed production techniques.

The Lao Agricultural Research Fund (LARF) aims to provide Lao scientists with an opportunity to compete for agricultural research funds.The LARF is open to government agencies, universities, agricultural colleges and NGO organisations based in the Lao PDR, which have a mandate to undertake agricultural research. Proposals must contain a defined research project, and can be of one or two years in duration. The annual funding limit for individual projects is US$6,000 and a maximum of US$10,000 for two year projects. The grant moneys are for expenditure only within the Lao PDR. More Info>>
