NAFRII's mandate calls for it not only to carry out research but also act as an information provider. This includes generating information as well as collecting and disseminating relevant agriculture and forestry information both within Laos and in the region.
In order to develop this capacity, NAFRI, through its Information Management and Strategic Planning Division (IMSPD) has developed an Information Service Strategy (2004-2010). The strategy focuses on improving the exchange of information between NAFRI centers as well as with key actors in the agriculture and forestry sector. In addition, it aims to develop effective mechanisms to disseminate research results and recommendations to key stakeholders can use at different levels.
An important aspect of strategy is to improve researchers to access to the global information system. Libraries and on-line information systems offer some of the most viable ways for researchers to find technical information relevant to their research.
Over the last three years, NAFRI has developed three on-line information systems. All three systems were informed and supported by the Thai AGRIS Center based at the Kasetsart University Library
Below is a brief description and the link:
1. Lao Agriculture Database (LAD)
2. National Agriculture Library Information System (NALIS)
3. Lao AGROVOC
Lao Agriculture Database
LAD has been established to improve the collection and dissemination of technical agriculture and forestry related information in Laos. It has been adapted from the FAO AGRIS system to include a range of other information (www.fao.org/agris). To date, there are more than 1030 resources. The database includes research results, surveys, training and extension materials, country reports, working papers, as well as policy and strategy reports. The database consists of bibliographic information, abstracts and to a limited extent, at this stage, full text digital files.

The Lao Agriculture Database has been designed to ensure that all can contribute. If you are interested in becoming a partner, please contact, Pasalath Kounsy at: email@example.com
National Agriculture Library Information System
The first one is the National Agriculture Library Information System. This is an adaptation of an open source library database system (from www.openbiblio.org). NAFRI has adapted the system so it can be used in Lao language (searching as well as data entry). The system includes interfaces for users as well as a library management system for managing users and resources within a library.

The NAFRI library is based at the information service building at NAFRI and currently contains more than 8,000 materials. This includes, books, reports, CDs, videos, a range of reference materials, etc.

The Lao AGROVOC
The Lao AGROVOC is based on FAO AGROVOC which is the common thesaurus used by FAO for agriculture and forestry terminology. It contains more than 15,000 agricultural related terms.
NAFRI decided to translate the AGROVOC terms to assist in the development of Lao Agriculture Database (LAD) system so that Lao researchers can better search and categorize research being generated. There are a number of other important spin-offs from Lao AGROVOC. First it will help standardize Lao language terminology used within the agriculture and forestry sector. Within Laos, this is unique since it is the first comprehensive attempt help to standardize usage of Lao language terms.
The Lao AGROVOC was developed jointly by a group of more than 40 experts from NAFRI, the National University in Laos and different line agencies under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. It was also informed and assisted by the Thai AGRIS center of the Kasetsart University Library which had already translated AGROVOC into Thai.
